Cool Music in Hot Phoenix!

 It's summer in        Phoenix!

There is one thing that I always think about when its summer in Phoenix and that is Wednesday nights at HandlebarJ.
Owned and operated by the Herndon family this has been a music/food institution in Phoenix since 1975. Rick and I started going on Wednesday nights in the summer when I wanted to work on our country dance skills and they offered free lessons.
The dance lessons got us in the door but the great music brought us back for more. (Oh look, that rhymed). The live music started at 7:30, and I knew I had Rick hooked especially when they had a horn section!!!
The Herndon Brothers are a "kick ass" country band of national caliber, recently opening for Little Big Town at big "4th" concert, and are the house band at HandlebarJ, but on Wednesdays they honor another much loved Phoenix music landmark, Mr. Lucky's. Local music legend, J. David Slone fronted the house band at Mr. Lucky's for 30 years and he sits in with The Herndon Brothers. Now, when you add the horn section, made up of fine local players, to this mix it is country music nirvana.
You may not know that Rick was a trombone player. (I probably shouldn't say "was" because it is the last thing I hear most nights as he practices in his studio). It was his elementary school instrument which eventually (along with the bass and guitar) put him through college.

The bottom line to all of this is, if you are in Phoenix on a Wednesday night looking for something fun to do try HandlebarJ. Look for us, we usually hangout down by the horns and be sure to say "Hi".

BTW: The fish and chips are a great buy and delicious!
